Welcome to Reach
I’m Freddie — a music journalist and writer operating chiefly in the field of contemporary electronic dance and ambient music. Reach is a place where I can share my writing and thoughts about the music I love, without editorial oversight other than my own.
As Deputy Editor for one moderately-sized website I gained some experience in the sought-after content and style of many larger online platforms, and found it largely lacking. While some sites are of a large stature to delve into important topics and operants in music, it seems many skirt only the surface of things that deserve a deeper look, or return to similar artists for features and spot-lighting.
Reach is my own attempt to get outside of that structure. I’ll seek to provide readers with really exceptional music, but also try to pry open the lid for that deeper look into community, mindset, trends, and more, particularly aiming to get outside of the typical narratives and familiar characters.
Music is a subjective journey and that is its beauty. I can’t promise to be impartial to my favourites, but I’ll make it fun!

This is very much a WIP version of the site and bits will tweak, change, and more, as I become accustomed to the workflow and the Substack platform.
As I get more comfy, I’ll switch on paid subscriptions. Some bits will remain for free forever - there shouldn’t be price tags on sharing music - but genuine work deserves genuine pay.

I’m an adherent to the thought that the majority of art and music is an inherently political thing. I won’t shy away from talking politics here, and in many cases will focus my lens on overtly political movements and cultures within the realms of music I’m discussing.
